Antietem National Battlefield   This Civil War site marks the end of Lee's first invasion of the North, and the battle claimed more than 23,000 men killed, wounded, and missing in one single day, September 17,1862, and led to Lincoln's issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. Educational programs are offered year round to scout groups and include programs such as: Cannoneers to Your Posts, Flags that Talk, and a Day in the Life of a Civil War Soldier.

Gettysburg National Military Park   Call ahead and arrange for a ranger/docent to ride with you through the park. They will bring the history alive for you and the scouts.

Flag House–1812 Museum   844 East Pratt Street, Baltimore, MD 21202, 410-837-1793. This is the l793 house of Mary Pickersgill, who hand stitched the 30 x 42 foot flag that flew over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write our National Anthem. The house is furnished with Federal antiques and collections from the Pickersgill family. An adjacent museum commemorates the War of 1812 and features an unusual audio-visual program.

Inner Harbor, Baltimore  Historical naval and sailing vessels. Each has educational programs and tours.

            USSConstellation:  The last civil war vessel afloat.

            USCGC Taney:   This Coast Guard cutter is the last surviving warship present at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. They also have an overnight program. Contact Heather Armstrong for more information: 410-396-3453

            USS Torsk: This Tench class submarine, built in 1944, patrolled the Pacific during WWII, torpedoing the last enemy warships sunk during that war. It holds the record for most dives of any sub, having submerged 11,884 times.

            Chesapeake Lightship: Beginning in 1933, this lightship marked the entrances to the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays for almost 40 years. Its masthead light, foghorn and bell helped guide mariners to safe harbor, while its anchors held it in position, defying the most violent storms and waves.

Stratford Hall Plantation   Robert E. Lee’s birthplace in Stratford, Virginia.  Just down the road from Washington’s Birth Place (see under National Parks). Both tours could be easily done in a day. Also near Westmoreland State Park: http://www.dcr.state.va.us/index.htm

Washington, DC   Smithsonian, monuments, Arlington Cemetery, White House, Ford’s Theater, National Arboretum, Capitol, National Arboretum, National Archives, Library of Congress, see if you can visit your congressmen in their offices, etc. You know the places, but don’t hesitate to call them or check out their websites to find out what special programs they may have for groups. Even if they don’t have set programs, they may still have special events or tours if you ask.
