U.S. National Parks System
Most national parks have a junior ranger program that allows kids
to tour the park and answer questions in a brochure and then earn a patch
or badge. Individual parks run their programs slightly differently so you
may want to call ahead to make sure they still offer it, whether they can
handle a large group doing it, etc. You

Spotsylvania
National
Military
Park
Fredericksburg,
Chancellorsville, Wilderness, and
Spotsylvania—this
is the bloodiest landscape in North America. No place more vividly
reflects the Civil War’s tragic cost, in all its forms. Visit the
battlefields, Chatham House, and historic downtown Fredricksburg. |

Fort
McHenry,
Baltimore
This is
a fabulous trip for Webelos for Citizen activity badge. They can
participate in Jr. Ranger program, experience a movie, guided ranger tour,
and self-guided tour of fort. They can also help retire the flag at the
end of the day—the sight of your scouts holding the edge of a replica of
the Star Spangled Banner is memorable and moving. Don’t miss this one!
For group tour information, call (410) 962-4290, extension 243, Mon. from
12:30 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., Wed. from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon, or Fri. from
9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. (all times Eastern). Call no less than three
weeks and up to six months in advance to ensure openings for your
group. Have all of your group's information ready when you call. Perhaps
plan to visit the Flag House as well. See under History. |

Washington
National Park
Ranger-guided tour available on a wide variety of subjects, such as
garrison life, the defense of
Washington,
etc. Scouts can earn Jr. Ranger patch.
Often has special events such as reenactments, military tattoos, and
others. Rangers are even willing to help with Bike Rodeos. Hiking,

George Washington’s
Birthplace
Visitors from all over
the world have come to see where the first President of the United States
was born. The park includes: Visitor Center; the brick foundation of the
house where he was born; the Washington family cemetery where George’s
father, grandfather, and great-grandfather are buried; the historical area
with the Memorial House, kitchen, and typical plantation surroundings; the
picnic grounds with a nature trail; and the Potomac River beach area.
Participate in the Jr. Ranger Program and plan your visit around special
events with living history demonstrations, revolutionary war encampments,
and farm and craft demonstrations.
